The Graduate School of Life Sciences' compulsory induction event for all new postgraduate researchers. It provides an understanding of the provisions, opportunities and requirements and mutual expectations of postgraduate study in Cambridge. It ends with an inspitational research talk from one of our most successful senior researchers and a Welcome Event in the Universtiy Museum of Zoology. Full details of the event can be found here

This course is part of the Management of Technology and Innovation suite of courses from the Judge Business School. The purpose of this course of lectures is to provide an introduction to microeconomics and to familiarise students with some basic concepts, tools and models relevant to management and business in general and, where possible, the management of technology and innovation in particular. Topics covered include some basic price theory, the firm, market structure, game theory, transactions costs, market power and externalities.

This course is part of the Management of Technology and Innovation suite of courses from the Judge Business School. This course is designed to provide an in-depth analysis of the factors affecting the extent and mode of commercialisation of innovations from the science base. It will include coverage of the factors affecting the choice of mode, and the factors affecting the likelihood of success within each mode. It is not intended to be a hands-on guide to starting new businesses, raising finance for enterpreneurial start-ups etc.

The course provides an overview of patterns of commercialisation. It gives an analysis of the different cultures involved in conducting research in a university and business setting, their implications for the commercialisation process and the extent to which convergence in systems of research is developing. It develops the concepts of systems of innovation, and of models of the appropriability of returns to innovation and commercialisation.

The course then analyses, in turn: the nature of small business and spin-off aspects of commercialisation; the characteristics of large company involvement in commercialisation from the science base and the implications of open innovation strategies by large firms; the importance of applying a sectoral system of innovation approach to commercialisation opportunities arising from different scientific fields.

One day research symposium with invited distinguished speakers. The interdisciplinary programme is designed to lay the groundwork for stronger ties between the University's research departments and the Clinical School, in addition to linking local and overseas research institutes and the media.

The event is organised by graduate students in the medical sciences, for postgraduates across the medical sciences and related areas.

Your lab notebook is one of the most important and precious objects you, as a scientist, will ever have. This course will explore how keeping an exemplary laboratory notebook is crucial to good scientific practice in lab research. The course will consist of a short talk, a chance to assess some examples of good and bad practice, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. You might like to bring along your own lab notebook for feedback. (Please note that issues relating to protection of Intellectual Property Rights will not be covered in this course).

This lecture is aimed at those writing scientific papers, but many of the principles apply equally to writing a doctoral dissertation. This course is aimed primarily at Plant Scientists but is open to students from all departments and the general principles are useful across the biological sciences. Using many examples, both good and bad, the emphasis is on preparing a dissertation that can easily be converted into papers for publication in high quality journals.
